  • Synopsis

    En juin 1953, l'élite canadienne-française s'embarque sur l'Empress of France pour aller assister au couronnement de la reine Élizabeth II. À bord du transatlantique, le caïd des caïds, délateur menacé de mort, fuit Montréal avec ses deux fils; il devra sacrifier l'un d'eux en échange d'un sauf-conduit.

    May 1953; Aboard an ocean liner heading for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II is Montreal's most ruthless Mafioso. Forced to leave his country, he is now faced with the most important decision of his life; will he sacrifice his youngest son for the passports he so desperately needs? World and personal history collide in this engrossing drama which charts the troubled waters of legacy and betrayal.

    Extrait de la pièce:" Très tôt le matin, une foule agitée prit d’assaut le majestueux transatlantique Royal Mail Steamship Empress of France de la Pacifique Canadien. Sur le quai, une fanfare militaire animait l’excitation des uns et les adieux des autres. (Fanfare.) Vers midi le signal du départ se fit entendre une première fois. (Corne de brume.) Les passagers avaient envahi tous les ponts du bateau. Seul celui des premières classes était presque désert."  - LE BIOGRAPHE

Je fais l’effort d’essayer d’oublier ! Je fais l’effort de suivre la doctrine de ton parti : l’amnésie, coast to coast ! Ton gouvernement a élevé la faculté d’oublier au rang des valeurs nationales. Ton gouvernement a réussi à nous faire croire que le massacre de Dieppe n’avait pas existé, que c’était juste une simple répétition générale pour un débarquement futur. Nous sommes mille deux cents mères canadiennes à avoir donné naissance à des figurants pour une répétition générale. Nos fils ne sont pas vraiment morts ; ils répétaient !"ALICE

Il n’y avait plus que des symboles d’antan tel l’avenir prometteur d’une jeune reine qu’on couronnait pour nous faire croire à des lendemains meilleurs." LE BIOGRAPHE.

    Dieppe, 1942



    Le débarquement raté de Dieppe en 1942. Sur la partie Est de la plage, les hommes de l'Essex Scottish, encore plus exposés, sont très rapidement bloqués par l'intensité des tirs allemands - l'échec des troupes à Pourville et surtout à Puys laissait aux Allemands l'intégralité de leur puissance de feu. Le Commandement allié, basé sur le HMS Cale, ne voyant rien de ce qui se passait à terre à cause de la fumée extrêmement dense et mal renseigné par des transmissions défaillantes, expédie de nouvelles vagues en renfort, Fusiliers Mont Royal et Commandos des Royal Marines, qui arrivent sur la plage dans une confusion totale et sans espoir d'améliorer une situation déjà compromise. La bataille meurtrière va continuer jusqu'à la fin de la matinée, et l'ordre de repli est donné vers 11 heures aux survivants qui tentent de regagner les embarcations venues les récupérer. Sur les 2000 hommes débarqués, 400 sont morts, et seulement 400 réussissent à rejoindre l'Angleterre. Les combats sont quasiment terminés deux heures plus tard. 

  • The failed Dieppe landing in 1942. On the eastern part of the beach, the men of the Essex Scottish, even more exposed, were very quickly blocked by the intensity of the German fire - the failure of the troops at Pourville and especially at Puys left all of their firepower to the Germans. The Allied Command, based on the HMS Cale, seeing nothing of what was happening on land because of the extremely dense smoke and poorly informed by faulty transmissions, sent new waves as reinforcements, Fusiliers Mont Royal and Commandos of the Royal Marines , who arrive on the beach in total confusion and without hope of improving an already compromised situation. The murderous battle will continue until the end of the morning, and the order to withdraw is given around 11 am to the survivors who try to regain the boats that have come to recover them. Of the 2,000 men landed, 400 died, and only 400 managed to reach England. The fighting was almost over two hours later.

Rien. Rien de tout cela n’a traversé l’Atlantique. Ici, la musique enterrait le son de l’Histoire. Là-bas, nos soldats étaient de la chair à canon. Ici, ils étaient une mélodie. J’espère qu’on ne mettra pas de musique sur le reportage du couronnement. Ça serait dangereux si les gens croyaient que tout cela, c’est rassurant. Neuf de nos jeunes compatriotes enterrant les voix de milliers de nos cadavres."  LE DIPLOMATE.

    Genèse de la pièce



    La première version de cette pièce a été écrite à bord du cargo Cast Otter lors de sa traversée de l'Atlantique en mai 1990. La traversée dura exceptionnellement 20 jours à cause de l'attente dans les différents ports dont celui de Sorel, Sept-Iles, l'Europort, Rotterdam et finalement Anvers. J'ai eu, par contre, tout le temps de terminer le premier jet de la pièce." Michel Marc

  • The first version of this piece was written aboard the freighter Cast Otter during its Atlantic crossing in May 1990. The crossing lasted exceptionally 20 days because of the wait in the various ports including that of Sorel, Sept- Islands, Europort, Rotterdam and finally Antwerp. On the other hand, I had plenty of time to finish the first draft of the piece." Michel Marc

    C'est sous ce titre qu'est née la première version du Voyage du couronnement, mise en lecture de l'auteur, Théâtre du Quat'sous et Cead, Montréal, 1990.



    Lecture de Quand la reine aura cent ans! a eu lieu au Théâtre du Quat'sous lors du retour de la traversée de l'Atlantique par Michel Marc Bouchard.Cette lecture a été exceptionnelle à cause de sa distribution qui était composée de André Brassard, René-Daniel Dubois, Louise Bombardier, Chantale Beaupré, Anne Caron, Michèle Magny, Lisette Dufour,Stéphane Lestage, René Gagnon, Huvert Loiselle, Anne-Marie Cadieux et BenoîtLagrandeur.

  • Reading of When the Queen is a hundred years old! took place at the Théâtre du Quat'sous during the return from the Atlantic crossing by Michel Marc Bouchard. This reading was exceptional because of its distribution which was composed of André Brassard, René-Daniel Dubois, Louise Bombardier, Chantale Beaupré, Anne Caron, Michèle Magny, Lisette Dufour, Stéphane Lestage, René Gagnon, Huvert Loiselle, Anne-Marie Cadieux and Benoît Lagrandeur.
